Strategy planning games on the Macintosh

Colonization

I have been playing Colonization (for Mac) for about a week now – still
on the same game.  I think it is even better than Civilization (which I
love) for several reasons.  It is like Civ under a magnifying glass –
instead of telling settlers to irrigate or mine or build roads, you have
much more direct control of different types of settlers – farmers,
fisherman, preachers, ore miners, etc.  More decision making means more
fun, more interest, more true simulation, more learning and more variety
in game strategy.

Who else out there is playing Colonization?  I would appreciate tips and
strategies?

Missionaries in Colonization

According to the manual, one way to improve relations with the Indians in
Colonization is to establish a mission in one of their villages. Every
time I have tried this (with a Jesuit piece) the village immediately gets
a red exclam and the Indians become very riled.

What am I doing wrong? Are the missions supposed to be developed on my
settlements (in the church)?

Please respond by email, if possible.

Anyone tried Harpoon II?

Sorry if there has already been info posted about Harpoon II, but I
haven’t seen any. I also checked the Harpoon home page, and I still
couldn’t find any info on Harpoon II.
Basically, has anyone out there played the recently released Harpoon II
for Macintosh?  I have the original and am genuinely interested in
upgrading, but I’m just not sure if it would be worth it.  Please respond
via private e-mail so as not to waste bandwidth.

Warlords II v1.0.7

The latest version of Warlords II (v1.0.7) is now available and can
probably be found on your favourite Mac ftp site.

There are six (!) different updates, depending on the version you have. If
you have v1.0.6, then there are three to choose from, otherwise there’s a
different three. In each set of three, there’s the 68k Mac version, the
PowerMac version and the probably-never-used Fat version (which you need
if you did a custom install indicating you wanted a version that would run
on any Mac).

Hopefully the filenames will make it obvious which one you want.

There are four changes in v1.0.7
1) Fixed a problem produced by the update to v1.0.6, which caused a
problem running on PowerMacs with Virtual Memory or RAM Doubler running.
The game would just beep and then quit. The problem wasn’t with the game,
just the update. Doh!

2) The warning about VM and RAM Doubler now only appears once (unless you
keep turning VM or RD off)

3) Items selected as targets for Quests will now always be found in a ruin.

4) MS-DOS save game are now loaded without an error being generated.

If you have any problems with the updates, drop me a line

New TacOps Review

Check out the July issue of ComputerUser magazine,  (the free one
available at software/book stores in the major U.S. metropolitan areas).
In an article on page18 entitled "Virtual Combat," they reviewed 15 combat
and simulation games that make for "realistic recreation on your PC or
Macintosh."  TacOps was given the highest rating, 4 stars, and called
"easily the best game reviewed for this article.  The other computer
wargames reviewed included Operation Crusader (Avalon Hill), and Iron
Cross (New World Computing).  The rest of the games included Dynamix’s
Aces of the Deep, Microprose’s Civilization and Colonization, and Domark’s
Out of the Sun.

The reviewer, Stephen Schaper, said "TacOps provides the best regimental
tactical combat simulation around, and the support is outstanding."

On behalf of Major, I want to again thank all of the TacOps gamers who
have supported us for the past year with their thoughtful comments and
suggestions.  We couldn’t have made TacOps into the quality game it is
today without your help.  Thank you.  And, you ain’t seen nothin’
yet….<g>

Warlords II woes

I’ve been trying to get a cross-platform e-mail game going with some
friends and I’ve run into a snag.  When I try to open the PC scenario on
my mac, I get a "not enough memory" error. I _have enough memory.  I’m
running Warlords II version 1.06 for PowerPC on a 7100/80 with 16 megs of
ram.  I’m using Stock System 7.5 (no 3d party extensions, no powertalk or
quickdraw gx).  I’ve given WLII up to 10 megs of RAM, and I still get the
message.  Can anyone out there offer a solution?
