I have to confess that I’ve never played Strategic Conquest, but if
it has the word "strategic" in the name, it’s a pretty good bet that
it belongs here!

I’ve played Civilization and liked it quite a bit.  While it’s similar to
Civ, Master of Orion is also pretty good for strategy types set in space.  You
basically pick one of 9 (?) possible races and set out to colonize/conquer/rule the
galaxy.  Each race has its own particular speciality such as strong ground
combat or excellent traders, etc.  As the immortal emperor of your planet, you also
decide which areas of technology to develop, such as propulsion, weapons,
computers, construction, force fields, and planetology.  Based on technological
advances, you can design new ships, increase the combat efficiency of your
ground troops as well as increase the productivity of your worlds.  One aspect that
does set it apart from Civ though is that there is no scoring system.  The goal is to
conquer the galaxy and it doesn’t matter how long it takes for you to do that.  But
to conquer the galaxy, you have 2 options: brute military aggression or via
election by 2/3 majority vote in the galactic council.  The neat thing about
this voting is that sometimes the computer is militarily too strong for you
to defeat so you cultivate alliances with other races to win the game.

I should add that I’ve played Orion mostly on the IBM version.  I did buy
the Mac version of the game and found the graphics to suck quite a bit.  If you
can stomach the poor graphics, this is a good game to play.

ONSLAUGHT status

Do any of you out there in AOLand know if the demo version of ONSLAUGHT
has been uploaded yet? I believe Frontal-Assault-Ware is active on AOL.
Please keep us informed about this product. From what I’ve heard, it
should be really good!

Ancient Art of War

Many years ago there was a game that I played back when I had an IBM
(yeah, but I had a lot of problems…) It was called the Ancient Art of
War, loosly based on Sun Tzu’s writings. Does anyone know if this game
ever made it to the Mac? If you have played the game, are there any
strategy games out there that are simlar? I’ve played Warlords, Legions,
Castles S&G, and none of them are as challenging or as fun. The main part
I liked about the game was the ability to losely control your troops when
they went into combat as opposed to just letting them go. Also maintaining
supply lines and other stuff. Any ideas?
Thanks,
Jeff

If you want to ask some general questions, I’d be more than happy to
answer them.

Strategic Conquest II

A recent post about a strategic games archive included a
preliminary list which mentioned "Strategic Conquest II."
I have the original "SC" and was unaware that another
version (II) existed. I would appreciate any information
on how to obtain a copy of it. Thank you.

What came after V4V?

A few years ago I bought a FANTASTIC game called V or Victory:Utah Beach.
Shortly after that the Army sent me to Korea, where I was Mac-less (and far
too busy crawling around frozen rice paddies to worry about games).

I understand that there were some other games after that. Russia? Stalingrad
or something? Crusader or something similar?

Did anyone play these? How did they compare to Utah Beach? Are any of them
still availaible? Where could I find them?

Sincerely

Dave

Re: Ishido

Unfortunately, I don’t know where you can find it nowadays, but
Ishido was made by Accolade, and works alright on my PowerMac 6100/60.  I’ve
had the game for years, and once in awhile still play it since it’s such an
addicting game.  The graphics, as old as the game is now, still are really
good.
